A typographer’s vow of chastity

after Dogma 95

1  Text must be set with type already owned.
New typefaces must not be acquired
(if particular sorts are necessary for the text,
a typeface must be chosen that contains them).

2  Illustrations must never appear apart from the text or vice versa.
(Images must not be used unless they illustrate the text.)

3  The type must be hand-set.
Any alignment or spacing attainable on the press is permitted.

4  The text must be in black.
Multiple type families are not acceptable.
(If there is too little variety of typestyle available to elucidate the text,
     the design must be reconsidered,
or a single element in the text hierarchy may be printed in red).

5  Photographic work and lamination are forbidden.

6  The design must not contain superficial elements.
(Gratuitous or superfluous marks must not occur.)

7  Temporal and geographical alienation are forbidden.
(That is to say that the design takes place here and now.)

8  Genre design is not acceptable.

9  The format must be a standard size.

10  The designer must not be credited.

Furthermore I swear as a designer to refrain from personal taste! I am no longer an artist. I swear to refrain from creating a ‘work’, as I regard the detail as more important than the whole. My supreme goal is to force the form and meaning out of my text. I swear to do so by all the means available and at the cost of any good taste and any aesthetic considerations. Thus I make my vow of chastity.
